Wig, Hand-Punched Hair, or Ready-Made Hairstyle? Choosing Hair for Your Silicone Mask

The base of a realistic silicone mask ships bald. That is not a limitation — it is the most flexible starting point. Three different ways to add hair: a wig you put on and take off, a hand-punched hair implant integrated into the mask itself, or a fully finished hairstyle we build for you from a reference photo. Each has its place.

Option 1 — Your Own Wig (Friction Fit)

You do not need a special version of the mask to wear a wig. Any standard wig adheres to the platinum-silicone scalp by friction — the surface naturally grips the wig base and keeps it from shifting during normal wear. This is the route most clients start with: buy three or four wigs, change character in 30 seconds, store the rest until the next role.

What to look for in a wig for a silicone mask:

  • Lace front for the most invisible hairline — the wig blends into the silicone forehead.
  • Adjustable strap on the cap for a snug fit without slipping.
  • Quality fibre — human hair or premium heat-resistant synthetic; both work, human hair styles more naturally.

Apply by aligning the front edge with the mask hairline, then pulling the back down over the silicone scalp. For active wear — dancing, performance, stunts — see Option 2.

Option 2 — Wig-Ready Base (+$110)

For wearers who change wigs often or perform actively, we integrate a professional wig-mounting system into the silicone scalp. It is the same kind of secure attachment used in film and stage productions where the wig cannot shift during high movement. You still use any standard wig; the difference is that the attachment is positive (not just friction), so the wig stays put through anything from a stage performance to a Comic-Con queue.

Choose this if: you own multiple wigs and swap between them regularly, or your wear involves dynamic movement.

Option 3 — Hand-Punched Hair (+$450)

Our hair specialists implant hair strand by strand into the silicone scalp, at the natural growth angles you would see on a real head. The result is permanent and integrated — there is no edge, no cap, no transition. You wash, style and cut it like real hair. It is the most realistic option and the one used for close-up film work. The implantation technique is described in our Materials & Technology page.

You choose:

  • Material — human hair (most natural movement) or high-grade yak/synthetic blends.
  • Colour — any natural or fantasy colour.
  • Length — from a few centimetres to past the shoulders.
  • Density — thin and natural, or thick and editorial.

The trade-off: it is permanent. Once we punch the hair, you cannot change colour or length without re-implanting. This option suits a wearer who has a settled vision of the character and wants the most convincing result possible.

Ready-Made Hairstyle From a Reference Photo

An extension of hand-punched hair: send us a photo of the exact hairstyle you want — a specific cut, a finished updo, curls, bangs, layers — and our team replicates it. You receive the mask with a fully styled character ready to wear out of the box.

Best photo references: clear front view, side view and back if possible. The clearer the photo, the closer the result. Lead time adds 2–3 weeks on top of base production. For fully custom faces with bespoke hair, see custom masks.

Washing and Caring for the Hair

For wigs: follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Most quality wigs are washed with cool water and gentle wig shampoo, then air-dried on a wig stand.

For hand-punched hair on the mask: wash with sulphate-free shampoo and cool water, working from the scalp outward. Pat dry with a towel — do not rub. Air-dry on a foam head form. Brush gently with a wide-tooth comb. You can use heat styling (curling irons, straighteners) on heat-rated human hair implants, but keep the iron away from the silicone surface itself.

Which Should You Choose?

A simple decision tree:

  • Just experimenting? Start with a wig and the base mask.
  • Want multiple looks? Wig-Ready base + a wig collection.
  • One specific character, close-up film/photo work? Hand-punched hair.
  • One specific character, ready out of the box? Ready-made hairstyle.

For most first-time buyers we suggest the Wig-Ready base — it gives the flexibility to discover what you actually want before committing to permanent hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the hand-punched hair colour later?

You can dye it like real hair if it is human-hair implant material. You cannot remove and re-implant without significant rework — best to choose the final colour upfront.

Will my own wig damage the silicone?

No. Standard wig caps, lace fronts and clips do not react with platinum silicone.

Can you implant eyebrows separately?

Yes — the eyebrows add-on (+$100) is a separate option from the scalp hair. We punch them strand by strand at natural angles and density.

How long does hand-punched implantation take?

Approximately 2 additional weeks on top of base production, depending on hair length and density.
